In a recent interview with Charlie Rose on 60 Minutes, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos unveiled Amazon Prime Air, a new drone delivery service that is able to transport packages up to five pounds (86 percent of Amazon's packages weigh less than five pounds, according to Bezos).
Bezos referred to the drones as “octocopters” and believes that they will help cut shipping times drastically. "It will work, and it will happen, and it's going to be a lot of fun," he said.
The Verge's David Pierce encapsulated the company's evolving ethos perfectly: "Amazon doesn't just want to reinvent the way we shop for and buy things, it wants to upend every step of the process—including how our purchases come to us."
Obviously there are regulations in place, and certain logistics to figure out (for now drones can only transport items for round trips as long as 10 miles), but Prime Air could be delivering packages to you by 2015.
